What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process between a psychologist and a client navigating around the impact of life events. Life events are anything and everything that may or may not have occurred in one’s life, from events before birth until the present day. Life events have a direct/ indirect impact on the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of an individual. Thus, psychotherapy is a platform where the impact of life events is explored with the purpose of well-being and psychological growth. The benefits of psychotherapy include a have a “safe space” to share one’s thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement including a broad knowledge about the self (internally and externally). The risks of therapy include exploring events and/or emotions that induce unpleasant emotions including parts of self that may be difficult to confront at a given period. These risks are normal and may provide important areas of growth within the therapy process.
